How to install a SSL certificate to java keystore file?

First, before buying a certificate you need to create a CSR (Certificate Signing Reqest) which is to be given for buying one. So for that you need to create a private key with in the server. This private key is not supposed to be shared to any one, but you need to create one before generating the CSR.

Follow the below steps.

Generating Keystore file

Run Command

keytool -genkey -alias keyalias -keyalg RSA -keysize 2048 -keystore domain.keystore

This will create a keystore named domain.keystore . You need to replace the domain name with yours. When asked for name and other details, you need to enter domain name for name. If its wild card certificate you need to enter *.domainname as name

Creating CSR

Run Command

keytool -certreq -keyalg RSA -alias keyalias -file csr.txt -keystore domain.keystore

This will create file named csr.txt which needs to shared to purchase the SSL certificate.

Once you got the SSL certificate purchased from the certificate provider follow the below steps.

Installing Root and Intermediate certicates

Most of the SSL providers will share root and intermediatory certificates along with the main certificate. You need to install it one by one starting from ROOT.

Run command

keytool -import -keystore domain.keystore -alias root -file domainroot.ca-bundle

Here the file name domainroot.ca-bundle is the roor file

For intermediate file run command

keytool -import -keystore domain.keystore -alias intrim -file intrimca.crt

Here the file name  intrimca.crt  is the intermediate file

For installing main certificate run the below command.

keytool -import -keystore domain.keystore -alias keyalias -trustcacerts -file domain.crt

Here the file name  domain.crt  is the main certificate file. Here the most important thing to note is, you need to use the same alias name used when  generating the keystore file in the first step. In the example its keyalias

Below shown is the my Second Communication to RBI date Sept 30 2014 -Floating interest rate not reducing automatically in loan accounts. This is the reply to communication from RBI.

Dear Sirs,

    Thanks for acknowledging my complaint. I would like to pin point a particular line of text on the circlular Interest Rates on Advances DBOD No.Dir.BC.13/13.03.000/2014-15 dated July 01, 2014. I have highlighed it in yellow .Here it says in case of existing loans banks should take consent of concerned borrower to reset the floating rates. In reality what happens is floating rate of loan goes up irrespective of borrower consent. But to bring it low borrower should write a written consent.  This isnt fair..right?

In my particular case. My loan account with number 0000006705******* (State Bank of Travancore, Branch: ****************) had a floating interest rate of  10% on 9th May 2007 (Starting of loan). Later the rate changed to 12.75% automatically. Later when i happened to walk in to branch around mid 2014 i submit a written request to bring it back to 10.25%.

My question is if floating interest rate goes up automatically, why cant it goes down automatically too?  Isnt it cheating by all Banks making use of the highlighted clause (that too technically incorrect manner)? Any common man who have dealt with loans with banks has faced this issue. May be banks cover it legally from terms sheet which we sign at the time of taking a loan.

The result is Banks loot crores of Rupees additional from loan borrowers even if the standard floating interest rates is revised and not getting reflected on individual loan accounts.

Please take this matter seriously and let me know what RBI can do to prevent this. Do move this to higher authorities, who can take a call on this.  If you want me to submit / do anything else am happy to help you. If you want me to come over and present my case i can do that too.

2.4 Floating Rate of Interest on Loans

Banks have the freedom to offer all categories of loans on fixed or floating rates, subject to conformity to their Asset-Liability Management (ALM) guidelines. The methodology of computing the floating rates should be objective, transparent and mutually acceptable to counter parties. The Base Rate could also serve as the reference benchmark rate for floating rate loan products, apart from external market benchmark rates. The floating interest rate based on external benchmarks should, however, be equal to or above the Base Rate at the time of sanction or renewal. This methodology should be adopted for all new loans. In the case of existing loans of longer / fixed tenure, banks should reset the floating rates according to the above method at the time of review or renewal of loan accounts, after obtaining the consent of the concerned borrower/s.

First Communication to RBI date Aug 30 2014 -Floating interest rate not reducing automatically in loan accounts

Below shown is my first communication / complaint with RBI regarding banks cheating on floating interest rates. I will update the responses and reply's as follow up blog posts.

Dear Sir,
   I would like to bring to the notice of RBI about a practice of many Banks in India including govt owned banks.

Banks are offering loans in Floating Interest rate to most of its customers. This interest rate is indirectly controlled by RBI and banks make periodic adjustments on this interest rate and it is supposed to get into effect of loan accounts. The problem is ,  Interest rate of peoples loan account goes up automatically according to RBI norms. But it will not come down automatically even if RBI reduces interest rate. For that you need to submit a request in written signed at the bank branch. 

This is followed in most of the banks like State Bank of Travancore , SBI , other private banks etc. Most people are not aware of it, so people are forced to pay more interest rate even if the interest rate of the bank went down.

My housing loan account from SBT faced this issue. Many of my friends and relatives also faced this issue from different banks.

I request Reserve Bank of India to take a look at this issue and take steps to manage.

വര്‍ഷം 2033. ചിങ്ങ മാസത്തിലെ അശ്വതി നാള്‍. അപ്പുകുട്ടന്‍ അച്ഛനുമൊപ്പം നടക്കാന്‍ ഇറങ്ങിയതാണ്.  അച്ഛാ ഇന്നു നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടില്‍ എല്ലാവരും വന്‍  ആഘോഷം ആണല്ലോ. എല്ലാവരും ആടി ആടി നടക്കുന്നത് എന്താണ്?

മോനേ ഇന്നല്ലേ ആ സുദിനം. വര്‍ഷത്തില്‍ ഒരിക്കല്‍ മാലോകര്‍ക്ക് സന്തോഷിക്കാന്‍ ഉള്ള ദിവസം.

അച്ഛാ... ഇന്നു മാത്രം സന്തോഷിക്കുന്നത് എന്തിനാണ്. എല്ലാദിവസവും സന്തോഷം നല്ലതല്ലേ.

മോനേ ഇതിനു പിന്നില്‍ വലിയ ഒരു കഥയുണ്ട്. അച്ഛന്‍ പറഞ്ഞു തരാം.

പണ്ട് പണ്ട് കേരളത്തില്‍ ഉമ്മച്ചന്‍ എന്ന പേരില്‍ ഒരു മഹാരാജാവ് ഭരിച്ചിരുന്നു.  അതിവേഗം ബഹുദൂരം ആയിരുന്നു രാജാവിന്റെ ഭരണ ശൈലി. പ്രജകള്‍ എല്ലാവരും സന്തുഷ്ടരായിരുന്നു.  ഈ രാജാവിന്റെ ഭരണത്തില്‍ അസൂയാലുക്കളായ ഒരു പറ്റം അസുരന്മാര്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് പാര പണിതു.

ആദ്യം നര്‍ത്തകി സരിതയെ ഇറക്കി നോക്കി...രാജാവ് വീണില്ല. പിന്നീടു രാജാവ് നടക്കുന്ന വഴിയില്‍ പാമോയില്‍ ഒഴിച്ചു. എന്നിട്ടും ഉമ്മന്‍ രാജാവ് വീണില്ല. പിന്നീടു കൊട്ടാരത്തില്‍ ടൈറ്റാനിയം ബോംബു  പൊട്ടിച്ചു നോക്കി. എന്നിട്ടും മിടുക്കനായ രാജാവ്‌ രക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു.

അവസാനം പതിനെട്ടാം അടവായി സുധീരന്‍ എന്ന വാമനനെ ഇറക്കി. ഭിക്ഷ ആയി മൂന്നു ആവശ്യങ്ങള്‍ സാധിച്ചു തരാം എന്ന് രാജാവ് വാമനന് വാക്ക് കൊടുത്തു.

ഒന്നാമതായി കേരളത്തിലെ 418 ബാറുകള്‍ പൂട്ടണം എന്നു വാമനന്‍ ആവശ്യപെട്ടു.  രാജാവ് സമ്മധിച്ചു. രണ്ടാമതായി ബാക്കി 312 ബാറുകള്‍ പൂട്ടണം എന്ന ആവശ്യവും രാജാവ് സമ്മധിച്ചു. ഇത് കൊണ്ട് ഒന്നും വാമനന്‍ തൃപ്തി ആയില്ല. അവസാനം കേരളത്തിലെ എല്ലാ മദ്യ ഷാപ്പുകളും നിര്‍ത്തണം എന്ന ആവശ്യം അംഗീകരിച്ചു കൊടുക്കണ്ടി വന്ന രാജാവ്‌ പാതാളത്തിലേക്ക്‌ ഒളിച്ചു ഓടേണ്ടി വന്നു.

എല്ലാ വര്‍ഷവും ചിങ്ങ മാസത്തിലെ അശ്വതി നാള്‍ (September 12) പ്രജകള്‍ക്കു പഴയ നല്ല കാലം അയവിറക്കാന്‍ പാതാളത്തില്‍ നിന്നും ലോഡ്‌ കണക്കു  വാറ്റുമായി  പ്രജകളെ കാണാന്‍ വരാന്‍ വാമനന്‍ രാജാവിനു അനുമതി നല്‍കി.

അന്നു മുതല്‍ എല്ലാവര്‍ഷവും ഇന്നത്തെ ദിവസം, ചിങ്ങ മാസത്തിലെ അശ്വതി നാള്‍ മലയാളികള്‍ എല്ലാം മറന്നു ആഘോഷം പൊടി പൊടിക്കുന്നു.

How to renew SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate on a keystore?

Recently we have to renew the SSL certificate on our company's product website. So we thought of sharing the steps we followed.

Get the CSR (Certificate Signing Request) file
For buying the renewal certificate you have to submit CSR file to the SSL issuer. You can either use the existing CSR file you have used earlier to purchase the SSL initially or you can export it from your keystore.
The command to export is

keytool –keystore clientkeystore –certreq –alias client –keyalg rsa –file client.csr

Buy the SSL certificate from issuer
Buy your SSL from the any of the issuers like verisign , comodo, positivessl etc. You have to paste the contents of the CSR file you generated in the previous steps to buy one. The issuer might email you the certificates or give you an option to download them.

Renewing the primary certificate on to keystore.

The certificate issuer will give you ROOT certificate, intermediate certificate as well as domain specific certificate to you. As this is a renewal you only need the domain specific certificate. Only thing you have to do is to import the domain certificate to your keystore under the same alias name you have user earlier for the domain certificate. The command is

keytool -import -trustcacerts -alias mydomain -file mydomain.crt -keystore keystore.jks

This will ask for your keystore password and will overwrite your existing certificate. Hope this information was helpful to you. Do share your thoughts and questions with us.

Today i found a wonderful site for all kind of services / tools required for managing pdf files. This saved me lot of time. It also saved me lot of printouts, yeah its good for environment too. This is a online free service that helps us do a lot of  actions like merging , conversion, editing files to PDF and backwards.

Why one should stay away from CCAvenue payment gateway?

Our recent experience in working with CCAvenue made me say this statement. Following are the reasons.

No sandbox testing

There is no way we can test the stuff in a test environment.  In their Integration kit doc it says they will white-list an IP for 15 days for testing. But when requested for it they say test it in production. Is it the way you test code?

Buggy code in integration kit

The integration kit they provide have java, jsp sample code which will not work.  The files was dated year 2012, so the bug was there for long time. So many people might have reported it, but didn't bother to correct.

It takes ages to setup an account end to end

Its been 5 months, yet the entire account activation process is not complete. That is getting money your clients payed to the gateway to your account.

Adding one more website is so tough
Say you have one CCAvenue gateway active and you want to enable gateay to your second website. Then the process you need to follow much of the same as getting it done for the first time. Will take more than 5 months.

Dummy cards with no real use
They have given dummy card details for testing the gateway. When you try to use it it will say max transaction per day is 5, So you cant do any more testing today.

So guys stay away from CCAvenue, if not be ready for a tough ride.

How to Increase Laptop Speaker Volume

Generally the speakers on laptop computers are usually not very loud.
Most consumer laptops are having this trouble.
This doesn’t mean nothing can do about it.
There are ways for you to increase the volume of your laptop a little more.

Most people use VLC player to play movies in laptops. VLC is the best player for laptops.
It is lightweight, portable, and can play almost any media format even videos downloaded
from Youtube.


You can increase the volume in your VLC player to 400% of its actual volume.

Hold CTRL+ and Keep Pressing the [UP] Key on your Keyboard.
You would see an image on the top right corner of your VLC player
The image would increase from 100% to 200% then to… 400% and increase the volume on your player.
This is quite enough to increase the laptop’s volume to the max.


Alternate Way
Cheap external USB speakers available in the market.
Buy one so that you can carry it easily in the laptop bag.
These cost around 1200 or less.

How it went , once I quit my day job

Its been a few months after i quit my day job and started my start-up.  Life was so different since then , It was eventful,  refreshing, joyful and funny. Yes am happy that i took the plunge.

Being at home is the best part of it. Enjoying the company of my family, especially my 8 months old son. His smile alone made my days sweeter. Got in to farming too as an aid to my father. We grew 1 ton tapioca and  1 ton of Chena recently. These were sold to local people/market at lesser rate than the market. These are our ways of making Kerala self sufficient. Now my morning walks are so close to nature, i walk alone in big open spaces with only sounds of nature around. So different from my earlier walks at the museum Trivandrum.

Coming to my start-up Finahub, we covered  lot of ground on these days. Our first client went live. We became the "Top 10 start-ups to watch out for in 2013". We got this award from the Legendary Kris Gopalakrishnan (Infosys Chairman and previous CEO).  We got ample media coverage.. we were everywhere.. The Indian Express, Tech Circle, Malayala Manorama, Dhanam, Mathrubhumi , Kerala IT news etc.  At home town Kochi the thing i enjoy the most is that i can go around anywhere just depending on public transport. No more driving in the traffic. I take my backpack and smart phone every where i go. At any moment i can get a support call from my client. It was an experience to sometimes open your laptop and work sitting anywhere even on benches near footpaths.

The people i got to meet and interact these days included the the big names like Sam Pitroda, Kris Gopalakrishnan, Rahul Chitale from Microsoft etc. The people i couldn't even dream of meeting while at my day job. Am very thankful to Startup Village Kochi for supporting us. You guys really gave us wings to fly.

Yes it's tough if you try to implement Palette  or multi select component in Tapestry5. I learned it the hard way, so thought of sharing it.

Err in favor of users

Andy Hunt and  Dave Thomas  once wrote a debit card transaction switch. A major requirement was that the user of a debit card shouldn't have the same transaction applied to their account twice. In other words, no matter what sort of failure mode might happen, the error should be on the side of not processing a transaction rather than processing a duplicate transaction. So, they wrote it on their shared whiteboard in big letters: Err in favor of users.

It joined about half-a-dozen other maxims. Jointly, these guided all those tricky decisions you make while building something complex. Together, these laws gave our application strong internal coherence and great external consistency.

Don’t follow the leader

Marketers (and all human beings) are well trained to follow the leader. The natural instinct is to figure out what’s working for the competition and then try to outdo it – to be cheaper than your competitor who competes on price, or faster than the competitor who competes on speed. 

The problem is that once a consumer has bought someone else’s story and believes that lie, persuading the consumer to switch is the same as persuading him to admit he was wrong. And people hate admitting that they’re wrong.

Instead, you must tell a different story and persuade listeners that your story is more important than the story they currently believe.

If your competition is faster, you must be cheaper. If they sell the story of health, you must sell the story of convenience. Not just the positioning x/y axis sort of “We are cheaper” claim, but a real story that is completely different from the story that’s already being told.
